What Our 1-Year Labor Guarantee Actually Covers (And What It Doesn't)
Every contractor says they stand behind their work. Here's exactly what that means at Handy Pioneers - in plain language, no fine print.
Every contractor says they stand behind their work. It's in every marketing brochure, on every website, in every sales conversation. But what does it actually mean? What happens when something goes wrong?
Here's exactly what our 1-year labor guarantee covers at Handy Pioneers - in plain language, no fine print.
What the Guarantee Covers
If any work performed by Handy Pioneers fails within one year of completion due to workmanship - meaning the failure is attributable to how the work was done, not to external factors - we will return and correct it at no charge. No diagnostic fee, no trip charge, no labor cost. We fix it.
Examples of covered failures: a door we hung that no longer closes properly due to hinge installation, a caulk line we applied that has separated at the joint, a deck board we replaced that has lifted due to fastener failure, a cabinet we repaired that has come loose from the wall.
What the Guarantee Doesn't Cover
The guarantee covers workmanship. It does not cover material failures (manufacturer defects in materials we supplied are handled through the manufacturer's warranty), damage caused by subsequent work by other contractors, normal wear and tear, or failures caused by conditions that existed before our work and were not within our scope to address.
It also does not cover damage caused by events outside our control: flooding, storm damage, pest infestation, or structural movement. We're a home services and remodeling company, not an insurance policy.
When We Open Something Up and Find a Hidden Problem
Here's the honest part most contractors don't put in writing. Our guarantee covers workmanship built on a sound foundation. Sometimes we pull up a floor or open a wall and find a problem underneath that nobody could see from the outside - rotted decking under old underlayment, a window frame that's gone soft behind the trim. When that happens, we stop, show you photos, and give you a clear choice in writing.
Rebuild it right: we fix the underlying problem and restore the area to a sound base, then do the work on top of it. A full structural rebuild like that carries our 2-year labor guarantee - the deeper we go and the more we control, the longer we can stand behind it. Or go over it: at your direction, we install over the existing condition. That keeps the cost down, but we can't guarantee work that sits on a base we weren't able to make sound - so that specific part falls outside the guarantee, and we put that in writing too. Everything else on the job stays covered.
Think of a window. A simple insert dropped into an old frame is faster and cheaper, but if we never open it up to the framing, we can't promise what's behind it. A full tear-out and rebuild to the studs is more work, and it's the version we can stand behind for the long haul. The same logic runs through every job: how much we can guarantee depends on how deep the install goes and whether the foundation under it is sound. We'll always tell you which one you're getting.
Why We Have This Policy
Because we're confident in our work. A guarantee is only as meaningful as the company's willingness to honor it - and honoring it requires being in business, being reachable, and being willing to show up. We've been serving Clark County since 2019. We're not going anywhere.
Washington State requires contractor registration and bonding through L&I. [1] The bond protects you if a contractor doesn't complete the work. Our guarantee goes further - it covers the quality of the work after it's complete. That's a choice we make because we believe it's the right way to operate.
"A guarantee is only as meaningful as the company's willingness to honor it. We show up." - Marcin Micek, Handy Pioneers
