Kitchen Island and Appliance Installation in Vancouver: What We Learned From a 'Simple' Job
The homeowner said it would take two hours. It took two days. Here's why that was actually a good thing.
The homeowner said it would take two hours. She'd watched a YouTube video. The island was pre-built, the appliances were sitting in boxes in the garage, and she'd already cleared out the old peninsula. 'It's basically just plugging things in,' she said.
It took two days. And at the end of those two days, she had a kitchen that was safer, more functional, and up to current code - which the two-hour version would not have been.
What the Scope Discovery Revealed
The island required a new 20-amp dedicated circuit for the cooktop. The existing kitchen circuits were already at capacity, and the cooktop manufacturer's installation requirements specified a dedicated circuit. This meant coordinating with our licensed electrical partner - a half-day addition to the schedule, but a non-negotiable safety requirement.
The flooring under the old peninsula location needed patching. The previous owners had installed the peninsula over the original hardwood, and the exposed area was a different finish and slightly different height than the surrounding floor. We sourced matching hardwood and patched the section before the island went in.
The gas line for the range was not up to current Clark County code. The existing flex connector was an older style that is no longer approved for use in new installations. [1] We coordinated with our plumbing partner to replace the connector before the range was installed.
Why This Is the Right Way to Do It
The homeowner could have found someone to install the island and appliances in two hours. That person would have plugged in the cooktop to an existing circuit, set the range on the old flex connector, and left the flooring gap under the island where no one would see it. The job would have been 'done.'
It also would have been a fire risk, a code violation, and a disclosure issue at resale. The 360° approach means we don't stop at the visible scope. We look at what the job requires to be done correctly - and we have the partner network to make it happen.
